TCF Canada exam format

Know the four sections before you start timed practice.

The official TCF Canada format covers listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Understanding the task count and time limit for each section helps you practise the right skill under realistic constraints.

39 · 35m

Listening

39 multiple-choice questions completed in 35 minutes.

39 · 60m

Reading

39 multiple-choice questions completed in 60 minutes.

3 · 60m

Writing

Three written-expression tasks completed in 60 minutes.

3 · 12m

Speaking

Three face-to-face tasks, including two minutes of preparation.

Listening comprehension

The listening section checks your ability to understand spoken French in everyday, social, and increasingly complex contexts. Because the audio continues, practise maintaining attention and making a decision without getting stuck on one item.

Reading comprehension

The reading section progresses across different kinds of written material. Train fast text identification first, then verify the answer against specific evidence rather than relying on familiar words alone.

Written expression

The writing section contains three tasks in one 60-minute period. Preparation should include planning, task completion, clarity, vocabulary range, grammar control, and enough time to review all three responses.

Oral expression

The speaking section is conducted individually with an examiner. Practise giving complete, organised responses, asking or answering naturally, and continuing even when you need to rephrase an idea.

Total duration

The four sections total 2 hours 47 minutes. Administrative time, identity checks, instructions, and breaks depend on the test centre and are separate from the published test duration.

Paper or computer

France Éducation international states that all TCF versions and sections can be offered on computer except speaking, which remains face to face. Ask your authorised centre which delivery format it uses.
